Umrah

What is Umrah?

Umrah is a form of worship and devotion to Allah that includes:

  1. Entering the state of Ihram (a special spiritual state).
  2. Performing Tawaf (circumambulation) around the Kaaba.
  3. Running between Safa and Marwa (Sa’i).
  4. Completing the act by shaving or trimming the hair.

How to Enter the State of Ihram

  1. A Muslim enters the state of Ihram at the designated place (Meeqat) as prescribed by Sharia.

  2. After making the intention for Umrah, they recite the Talbiyah:

“Labbayk Allaahumma Labbayk, Labbayka La Shareeka Laka Labbayk. Innal Hamda Wan-Ni’mata Laka Wal-Mulk, La Shareeka Lak.”
(Here I am at Your service, O Allah, at Your service! You have no partner! I am at Your service! Indeed, all praise and blessings belong to You, and so does supreme authority. You have no partner.)

  3. During Ihram, one must avoid all prohibitions associated with this sacred state.

Tawaf (Circumambulation)

  1. Enter the Haram and proceed toward the Kaaba.
  2. Face the Black Stone and begin Tawaf, moving counterclockwise with the Kaaba to your left.
  3. Complete seven rounds around the Kaaba, starting and ending at the Black Stone.
  4. Upon completing Tawaf, pray two Raka’ah at any suitable place within the Haram.

Sa’i (Walking Between Safa and Marwa)

  1. Begin at Safa, where you make the intention for Sa’i.
  2. Walk toward Marwa, completing one round.
  3. Returning back to Safa completes the second round.
  4. Continue this process until you complete seven rounds, ending at Marwa.

Shaving or Trimming the Hair

  1. After Sa’i, men should proceed to have their heads shaved or hair trimmed.
  2. Women gather their hair and trim about 1-2 cm from the ends.
  3. This marks the completion of Umrah and the end of Ihram.

Important Etiquettes During Umrah

  • Avoid harming others in the Haram, such as pushing, jostling, or blocking pathways.
  • Do not enter overcrowded areas unnecessarily or disrupt the flow of circumambulation.
  • Follow the guidance of security personnel and the observers to ensure safety and smooth movement for all pilgrims.
