Karate Youth Engagement Program

Welcome to the DFIC Sisters Group – a dedicated, inclusive community designed for Muslim women seeking spiritual growth, knowledge, and sisterhood. Our mission is to provide a safe and welcoming environment where sisters can come together, learn, and support one another.

Monthly Halaqas & Events:

We host regular monthly halaqas led by knowledgeable speakers, offering insights into various aspects of Islam, personal development, and community building. Our events range from educational seminars and workshops to social gatherings and cultural celebrations, ensuring a well-rounded experience for all members.

Sisters' Tea Time – Every 2nd Sunday:

In addition to our halaqas, we have a monthly Sister Tea Time every 2nd Sunday. This is a wonderful opportunity to relax, chat, and connect with fellow sisters. Bring a snack to share with the group and let’s enjoy some quality time together. It’s the perfect setting to build lasting friendships and strengthen our sisterhood.

At Darul Falah Islamic Centre, the Karate Youth Engagement Program is a structured activity for children and youth in our community. It is one of the ways the Centre advances the moral and character development of Muslim youth — teaching discipline, respect, self-control, perseverance and responsibility, alongside the physical activity itself.

This is not a sports club. The program is operated as part of the Centre’s broader religious and community engagement work, and it is delivered by a volunteer instructor under the direction of the Centre’s Board of Directors.

Why we run this program

Our youth activities are connected to the Centre’s religious and community mission. The karate program is designed to:

  • keep youth connected to the mosque and a positive community environment;
  • teach Islamic values of discipline, respect, patience, self-control, honesty, and responsibility;
  • provide a supervised, safe environment for children and youth;
  • support moral and character development;
  • include youth from families who might not otherwise have access due to financial barriers.

Schedule

Classes are held at the Centre on the following days and times:

  • Saturday — 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Sunday — 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Location: Darul Falah Islamic Centre, 1876 Wallace Street, Regina, Saskatchewan.

Instructor

The program is delivered by Mr. Suhayeb Mir, a black-belt karate instructor based in Regina. Mr. Mir volunteers his time and receives no salary, fee, honorarium, or share of registration revenue from the Centre or from participants. He has provided a current criminal record check (including a vulnerable sector screening) and operates under a written Volunteer Instructor Agreement with the Centre.

Who can join

The program is open to children and youth in our community. We welcome participants regardless of background. Children of all skill levels are welcome — beginners as well as those with prior martial-arts experience.

Fees and fee assistance

A small registration fee of $50 per child helps cover facility costs (utilities, insurance, cleaning, equipment, supervision).

Fee assistance is available. No child will be turned away for inability to pay. Families experiencing financial hardship can request a full or partial fee waiver — please contact the Program Coordinator in confidence. A signed self-declaration by a parent or guardian is sufficient. Waivers are administered confidentially and respectfully.

All fees are collected by the Centre. The Centre uses these amounts only to cover facility overhead and program support — no fees are paid to the instructor.

Safety and standards

Participant safety is a priority. The instructor follows the Centre’s child-protection and supervision rules. Sessions are appropriately staffed; the instructor is never alone with a participant outside of scheduled session times. The instructor maintains a current vulnerable-sector screening on file with the Centre.

The karate program is a character-development and physical-activity program. It is not a medical, therapeutic, or clinical service, and we make no health-treatment claims.
